Dr. Kenny said, “What is
technology?” “They are invented after we were born, for kids in 21st
century computer and telephone are not technology to them since they already
been developed when they were born”.
Yes, students today are digital natives.
They are hanging around with technology everyday from daylight until they go to
bed. It is true that using technology in their study, for instance blogging,
online searching, and communicating with their peers could have numerous advantages,
you name it.
However, how could the guardians and
teachers even students themselves be able to prevent them from those unsafe
situations? We should consider this question seriously.
We cannot even think what will happen next!!
That is only an example. Internet can be
very hazard/inappropriate to kids, so learning how to protect our students from those
unsuitable information becomes a very important task to teachers.
A lesson as the one in the video is a good
example for teachers. Developing a class for our students to talk about
Internet safety is necessary that students can really learn how to protect
their cyber communities and their privacy.
Do you know?
•
42% of parents don't review the content that their teen(s) are
reading and/or writing in chat rooms or instant messages;
•
Parents are not familiar with the most common IM
shorthand/lingo,i.e. :
57% of parents don't know LOL (laughing out loud)
68% don't know BRB (be right back)
92% were unaware that A/S/L means age/sex/location
95% of parents weren't familiar with POS (parents over shoulder)
and P911 (parent alert)
•
28% of parents don't know if their teens are speaking with
strangers online;
•
30% of parents let their teens use computers in private areas of
the home (e.g. bedroom, office).
WOW, I cannot believe my eyes to those statistics! However, it
is good to acknowledge parents to be aware about the information they are
lacking and what they need to know to raise their children. Parents should do
some homework either online or wherever they can get a chance to learn Internet
safety, or if it is possible that local school should open a class for them, teaching
them to prepare for their knowledge about that. Setting rules for your kids to
let them know what can do and what cannot do when they use the computer or
other online devices.
What should kids know?
Learning can be fun and easy
if we could lead students the correct way to use the technology, to protect
students from Internet hazard, there are still many tasks we need to do.
However, we have to overcome this and help students to get a maximize use of
Internet.
